April 12, 2024: PRIX JEUNESSE INTERNATIONAL 2024: 60 years of commitment to quality in children’s television

For 60 years, the PRIX JEUNESSE INTERNATIONAL has now fulfilled its mission to promote excellence in children’s and youth television worldwide. This year, the world’s most renowned festival for kids’ TV will take place from May 24 to 29 at Bayerischer Rundfunk in Munich, Germany. Participants can expect a packed week with programmes from all over the world, exciting workshops and enriching insights into what makes good television for children.

What started as a mostly European competition in the year 1964 has evolved into the essential creative exchange and meeting point for children’s media professionals and scientists from all over the world. Over 500 children’s media experts from over 60 countries travel to the festival in Munich every two years. The intense week of networking inspires new approaches and renews commitment to child audiences. And not only does the world travel to Munich; the PRIX JEUNESSE comes to the world:  To date, the festival’s team and its global network of partners have presented 941 “Suitcase” and workshop events in 105 countries and 261 cities.

At PRIX JEUNESSE, the participants are much more than just passive viewers: Everyone is invited to take part in the voting for the winning programmes. The strengths and weaknesses of each programme in competition are being discussed in lively debates in order to award the sought-after PRIX JEUNESSE awards to the best and most innovative programmes.

International final programs reflect the diversity of children’s television

International children’s and youth formats from the last two years can be submitted to the competition. This year, 406 films and television programs from 51 countries were submitted to the competition by production companies and TV broadcasters. 84 entries were selected for the final round by an international pre-selection jury in January. The range of programmes in the six main categories Fiction/Non-Fiction up to 6 years, Fiction/Non-Fiction 7-10 years and Fiction/Non-Fiction 11-15 years covers all genres that children’s television has to offer: From comedy formats to drama and animated action series to documentaries and educational programs.

In addition to the main awards, there are several special prizes to be won by the finalists. Both UNICEF and UNESCO honour programmes that meet their respective principles in a special way. Two international expert juries will award prizes for innovative approaches to the representation of gender diversity and for contributions to promoting children’s climate literacy. The Heart Prize will be awarded to the “Winner of Hearts”, while the Special Achievement Award will honour outstanding contribution in the field of children’s media. In addition, a German Children’s and an international Youth Jury will hand out prizes to their favourite programmes.

2024 festival under the motto “For Us, No Planet B!”

Under this year’s festival motto “For Us, No Planet B! Kids TV and Sustainability”, discussions will address the question of what role the children’s TV industry can play in promoting sustainability and environmental protection. In addition to discussing interesting contributions that deal with the topics of environmental responsibility and climate change in a child-friendly way, the “Climate Night” will include a presentation of current research finding on forms of child-oriented media communication on the climate crisis. In further info sessions, participants are invited to explore the possibilities of promoting climate literacy through children’s television and gain new insights for their own work.
